All About The System

Hello everyone!

Looks like this topic has became the talk of the town! So who would want to miss out on the action eh? :) It has been two weeks since we were exposed to topics regarding health system and allow me to share some information through this very humble blog.

The first module of this block is basically about the concepts of health system and its main goals. As an addition, these topics are also directly linked to issues of globalization and decentralization as a part of system integration and health system evolution. Before one goes deeper regarding the matters mentioned, we should all ask ourselves one question.

What does "system" means?

A system is a regularly interacting or interdependent group items forming a unified whole. It can be a group of cells working independently and interactively to produce a certain hormone; or several parts of a gorgeous Lamborghini engine to produce the ultimate performance. It’s the system’s components that keep something running, and without this, the system will fail to achieve its goals. You get the point, right? :)

As for health systems, they are particularly built from a group of dedicated individuals and organizations whose main purpose or objective is to improve health.

The components of the system may vary from resources, financing, payment models or management. Different countries have different ways as to how they run the system, but the components present in their policies and laws are always revolving around similar issues.

The main goals for health care systems, regardless its contradicting policies or stakeholders, is to

Achieve good health,
Responsiveness to the expectations of the population,
and fair financial contribution.

Achieving good health includes promotion, restoration and also maintenance.

Quoting WHO, it says that :
“Health systems have undergone overlapping generations of reforms in the past 100 years, including the founding of national health care systems and the extension of social insurance schemes. Later came the promotion of primary health care as a route to achieving affordable universal coverage – the goal of health for all”

One may also ask the very important question as to how far these goals and expectations are met at a national and community level. Therefore, one of the very main purposes of developing this system is for constant improvement and assessment so that it can be standardised and work at its utmost efficiency.

Still confused? Hehe. Worry not as the explanation above is only to clarify the fundamental concepts of a system. Hopefully as time progresses, we will obtain the knowledge and understanding to discuss more deeply regarding the matter.

Until next time :)
